Public Engagement Opportunity: Revised Environmental Protection Plan Guidelines and Interpretation Notes

On March 13, 2026, the Office of the Regulator of Oil and Gas Operations (OROGO) released draft revised Environmental Protection Plan Guidelines and Interpretation Notes for public review and comment.

The engagement period closes on May 4, 2026. The feedback received will be summarized and made public in the second quarter of 2026, along with OROGO’s responses.

On November 3, 2025, The Office of the Regulator of Oil and Gas Operations (OROGO) released draft revised Safety Plan Guidelines and Interpretation Notes for public review and comment.

The engagement period closes on January 16, 2026. The feedback received will be summarized and made public in the first quarter of 2026, along with OROGO’s responses.

Regulating Post-Abandonment Remediation

Date

Since 2017, the NWT has seen significant closure activity associated with oil and gas operations: well abandonments, decommissioning and removal of surface infrastructure, and abandonment of pipelines. As a result, the regulation of post-abandonment remediation for oil and gas operations has emerged as an area for discussion.

The Office of the Regulator of Oil and Gas Operations has initiated a pilot approach to regulating post-abandonment remediation under the Oil and Gas Operations Act and has issued a question-and-answer document in response to feedback from industry and other stakeholders. 

Service Rig Operation Safety Guidelines and Interpretation Notes

Date

On March 31, 2025, the Regulator issued Service Rig Operation Safety Guidelines and Interpretation Notes (Guidelines) under section 18 of the Oil and Gas Operations Act (OGOA).  

The Office of the Regulator of Oil and Gas Operations (OROGO) has also published a Summary of Public Engagement Results, which captures the feedback received during the public engagement process for the draft Guidelines and how it was considered in the final version of the Guidelines.
