Since 2017, the NWT has seen significant closure activity associated with oil and gas operations: well abandonments, decommissioning and removal of surface infrastructure, and abandonment of pipelines. As a result, the regulation of post-abandonment remediation for oil and gas operations has emerged as an area for discussion.
The Office of the Regulator of Oil and Gas Operations has initiated a pilot approach to regulating post-abandonment remediation under the Oil and Gas Operations Act and has issued a question-and-answer document in response to feedback from industry and other stakeholders.
